Serial offender caught for stealing bike

Arrest leads to inter-state gang of motorcycle thieves
Chennai: A 38-year-old serial offender, involved in stealing bikes from the parking area of the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), was caught red-handed by a police team on Friday. The accused, Prabhu Das of Ponneri, was making a futile attempt to open the lock of a motorcycle when the cops caught him.“He was in possession of at least 25 bike keys of different makes with him when our team caught him,” a senior police official said, adding that the accused initially attempted to act as if he is mentally ill.
Eventually, on further investigations, he confessed to be part of a bike stealing gang in the city and told the cops that the bikes would be ferried to a godown in Ponneri.“From there, the bikes would be loaded in containers and transported to Andhra Pradesh and other states,” the officer added.Based on inputs provided by Prabhu, cops seized more than five bikes and have also traced the location of at least 10 other bikes, all stolen by the accused.
“He is part of a larger network which targets bikes at CMBT, railway stations and less-manned parking lots in the city. The stolen bikes might as well be supplied to those who indulge in criminal activities,” an investigating official said. Initial probe has revealed that Prabhu coordinates with his accomplice based in Andhra Pradesh and the duo could have stolen more than a 100 two-wheelers in the city. The Koyambedu CMBT police registered a case and remanded Prabhu in judicial custody.
