IPL 8 MI vs SRH: Lasith Malinga, Mitchell McClenaghan fire MI to victory

Malinga takes 4 while McClenaghan took 3 to help Mumbai crush Sunrisers by 20 runs

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians bowled brilliantly at the death as they stormed to 20-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL-8 here at the Wankhede stadium on Saturday. The visitors, who were chasing 158, looked set for a comfortable victory at 134/4 in 17 overs but Lasith Malinga’s (4/23) sensational penultimate over in which he took three wickets conceding just one leg-bye turned the contest on it head. Sunrisers needed an improbable 30 runs off the final over.

It was New Zealand left-arm fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan (3/20) who sowed the seeds for the successful defence. Sunrisers managed just three runs in the 18th over bowled by McClenaghan and he also accounted for danger-man Ravi Bopara. Shikhar Dhawan made a brisk 42 off 29 balls with seven boundaries and a six. K.L. Rahul (25, 27b, 1x6) and Bopara (23, 28b, 1x4) chipped in with useful contributions but struggled to keep pace with the mounting required rate.

Earlier, Sunrisers restricted Mumbai Indians to 157/8 with some disciplined bowling. After Lendl Simmons’s half-century, Kieron Pollard (33, 24b, 3x4, 1x6) and skipper Rohit Sharma (24, 15b, 2x4, 1x6) played brief cameos to lift Mumbai Indians to a fighting total. Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the charge with three wickets while Dale Steyn (2/38) and Praveen Kumar (2/35) bottled up Mumbai. Karn Sharma (1/30) and Trent Boult (0/27) also bowled tightly.
Around 17000 underprivileged school kids had flocked the stadium in about 400 buses as part of Mumbai Indians-Reliance Foundation Education for All social initiative. The kids brought some luck for the home team who finally registered their first home win this season after losing the first two games here.
After being asked to field, the visitors unleashed pace duo of Steyn and Boult together for the first time. However Boult and Bhuvneshwar opened the bowling and didn’t trouble Simmons and his opening partner Parthiv Patel. They put on 42 runs for the first wicket in 5.4 overs.
