Karnataka: Statehood demand earns MLA a suspension

The decision to suspend him from Congress legislature party (CLP) was unilateral

BENGALURU: The ruling Congress has suspended A.S. Patil Nadahalli, a legislator representing Devarahipparagi in the Legislative Assembly, for embarrassing the state government with his statements on separate statehood for north Karnataka and criticising Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for his failure to protect Kannadigas in Goa.

Mr Patil, however, told the media that the decision to suspend him from Congress legislature party (CLP) was unilateral as the show cause notice did not reach him. “I was in Bengaluru attending the legislature session, but the notice was sent to my constituency and therefore I did not get it. Now, they have suspended me for not replying to the notice,” he added.

Two days ago, while speaking about eviction of Kannadigas settled on Baina beach in Goa, Mr Patil had charged in the Assembly that the state government failed to protect the interests of Kannadigas in Goa.

Besides, he blamed the government for not taking action against those trying to usurp Belagavi from Karnataka. Following such statements, CLP secretary Mr Appaji Nadagouda had issued a notice to Mr Patil, and as the latter did not reply to the notice, action was initiated against him.
