Caste survey: IT city not keen, Karnataka government worried

State government is likely to take a call whether or not to extend it on April 25 or 26 in view of the poor coverage

Bengaluru: Even as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ruled out extension of the much-publicized socio-economic and caste survey, the State government is likely to take a call whether or not to extend it on April 25 or 26 in view of the poor coverage especially in Bengaluru city with just 6-7 per cent achieved in two weeks.

On Wednesday, the CM held a video conference with deputy commissioners, chief executive officers and additional deputy commissioners of all districts to take stock of the ongoing state-wide survey. Mr Siddaramaiah, without mincing words, issued strict instructions to all DCs to hasten the process and complete it before April 30 failing which they would be held responsible. According to him, Tumakuru district stands first with 56 per cent followed by Kolar with 52.62 per cent and Ramanagara with 50.61 per cent.

However, the most shocking information was about the coverage in Bengaluru with just 6-7 per cent in the last two weeks despite huge publicity. It would be a herculean task for enumerators to cover the remaining 95 per cent of the population in the next eight days. Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission will review the progress next week to assess the need to extend the survey by a few more days.
