Kannur University opts for PG entrance

The syllabus of PG courses in the varsity is more research oriented

KOZHIKODE: Kannur University has decided to implement open entrance examination for admissions to PG courses conducted directly by the varsity.

The decision will be implemented from this academic year. The varsity is also going for a single window admission process for all UG-PG courses under the varsity from 2015 –’16 academic year.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Kannur University Registrar Dr Balachandran Keezhoth said that the admission based on entrance marks will improve the academic quality in the PG departments.

“The syllabus of PG courses in the varsity is more research oriented. The entrance examination to various PG departments in the University is a kind of aptitude test to know how much the student is interested in the research work,” he said.

Currently the PG admissions are based on both marks in degree examinations and entrance examinations. The University observed that many students who were interested in research were not getting a chance to do post-graduation courses due to lesser marks in UG.

Also, those getting admission in PG courses based on UG marks were not showing interest in taking up studies further in the research field. Presently, Central Universities are admitting students for PG courses based only on marks secured in the entrance examination.

The varsity will also move to single window admission system for UG and PG courses in its departments and affiliated colleges. A team of the University is currently visiting Kerala University to learn the various aspects in implementing the single window system of admission.
