CPM ignores VS Achuthanandan move to rally RSP, JD(U)

JD(U) state president Veerendrakumar denies talks; does not rule out backroom negotiations

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A day after Sitaram Yechury took over as party general secretary; Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan took the first step to connect with RSP and JDU.

However, the CPM state leadership distanced itself from Achuthanandan’s move to bring RSP and JDU closer to the LDF.

“I am not aware of any such move,” said CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan when asked about the talks between opposition leader and RSP-JDU.

CPI legislature party leader C Divakaran was the first to disclose on Monday morning that the veteran leader had an informal talk with the leaders of JDU and RSP to seek their support for the LDF candidates in the Rajya Sabha elections.

Though no one expected the two parties to vote for the LDF candidates which was also evident by evening, when results came out, sources said Achuthanandan’s move was aimed at opening a channel between the two sides.

Though JDU state president M P Veerendra Kumar denied having held any talks with opposition leader, party sources did not rule out back room negotiations to pave the way for home coming.

The statement of JD(S) president Mathew T Thomas that the merger Janata Parviar should be replicated in the state, pointed to the present mood in the two parties.

Veerendrakumar, however, said he would not hesitate to share the dais with the Left Front to oppose the Sangh Parivar.

It may be noted that Yechury has already made it clear that the matter was before the LDF and if required the politburo would assist the CPM state leadership.

At the national level too, the Left front has already been expanded by inducting CPI(ML) and SUCI and the central leadership of the alliance parties want similar expansion exercise in states.
