Rains expose road repair quality in Hyderabad

Potholes, construction waste trouble Tolichowki residents

Hyderabad: Every hundred metres or so, the road from Tolichowki to Shaikpet is dug up, without any cautionary signs for road users.

While the Tolichowki Crossroads has always been a traffic choke point, the damaged appr-oach roads, construction waste and debris of demolished buildings are adding to the problem.

Even though work on the flyover is complete, the approach roads remain potholed and the repair works taken up are of such low quality that the recent rains have washed them way.

“Since the last one-and-a-half years, some work or the other has been going on on this part of the road. Improving infrastructure is fine, but why not do it in a way that it doesn’t make it so troublesome that we have to leave half-an-hour early to beat the rush and still get stuck?” said Md Irfan, who commutes from Tolichowki to Ameerpet.

“Overnight, the area in front of an apartment was dug up in such a way that even taking out the car from the parking lot seems like an achievement. Post rains, all these pits are now filled with water and have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. As usual, officials aren’t bothered,” said Ms Maria, who lives in Brindavan Colony.

Even though the flyover meant to ease traffic between Hitec City and Mehdipatnam is ready, the traffic woes of the Tolichowki and Shaikpet residents remain as before as the inaugural date hasn’t been announced yet.

With the deferred inaugural, traffic congestion seems to be the only constant on this road as the ongoing works of the other side of the flyover are moving at a snail’s pace.

When contacted, GHMC engineers and officials handling the flyover construction said that they weren’t authorised to speak about it.
