Ruling Cong can get BBMP trifurcation bill passed in Assembly

Bengaluru: The stage is set for a day-long special legislature session convened by the Congress government on Monday to pass a controversial bill to amend the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act and facilitate the trifurcation of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike((BBMP) which in all likelihood will be a stormy one.
A war of words is on the cards between the opposition BJP and JD(S) which are vehemently opposing the bill and the ruling Congress which is reportedly looking for an excuse to postpone the elections to BBMP, the state's largest civic body. A single judge bench of Karnataka high court has ruled that the polls should be held by May 30.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a senior leader in the ruling party observed that they have not ‘progressed an inch’ as far as Bengaluru affairs are concerned despite a directive from no less than AICC president, Sonia Gandhi to Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah at a thanksgiving rally in Mandya soon after the Congress came to power in May 2013.
"The state government tried to pass the buck to BJP, the ruling party in BBMP that the safforn party was responsible for the mess in the civic body’s affairs. The BJP however succeeded in generating an impression among Bengalureans that it is the state government which is neglecting Bengaluru completely, as a result, the Congress will find the going tough if polls are held at this juncture," the source explained.
The source added that fireworks could be expected as the Congress and the combined opposition will try their best to put forth their points of view on BBMP trifurcation. "City legislators cutting across party affiliations are sure to up the heat during the debate in the legislature," the source claimed.
The Congress can get the bill passed in the Assembly, but it will be an uphill task in the Legislative Council as they will be outnumbered by the combined strength of the opposition.
The ruling party will face another hurdle if Governor Vajubhai Vala sits on the bill with or without raising any queries. Earlier, the governor had returned the trifurcation bill after seeking some clarifications.
If the Congress succeeds in getting the bill passed, the Opposition will have no option but to knock the doors of Raj Bhavan to make sure it does not become law and the civic body is divided.
