Tamil Nadu government presses for CISF at Mullaperiyar dam

Tamil Nadu government has reiterated its demand in the Supreme Court
New Delhi: Despite Kerala’s opposition, the Tamil Nadu government has reiterated its demand in the Supreme Court for a direction to the Centre and Kerala to deploy Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at the Mullaperiyar dam for guarding the dam and the appurtenant structures as Kerala had failed to do so.
The case comes up for further hearing on April 20 before a Bench headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu.
In its rejoinder to Kerala’s opposition, Tamil Nadu maintained that its officials had the full authority to carry out all incidental and other activities for the day to day maintenance and repairs for the safe upkeep of the dam and it could be subjected to any restrictions on free access to the Mullaperiyar Dam.
It said any impediment on the free access to the leased area by the Kerala government would not only be against the inter-state agreement of 1886 and 1970, but would violate 2006 and 2014 judgements.
