50-year-old devices result in power cut

Officials ascribe power breakdowns in some parts of the city due to the usage of old equipments
Hyderabad: A drive to replace old power wires and conductors, some of which dating back to 1950s, resulted in power disruptions in some parts of the city on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday night, few colonies in West Marred-pally and Sainikpuri reported power disruptions for two to four hours. Officials ascribe these breakdowns to the usage of old equipments in parts of the city. Senior officials claim that some conductors, which are currently in use in the city, are 50 years old, while those in the Old City date back to 1950s or 60 years old.
The old wire and conductors are at risk of snapping or falling off in case of heavy winds and gale, forcing the officials to replace them. “Night time disruptions are due to some local issues like snapping of wires or some cable insulation issues. During such timings, power will be switched off, the fault will be rectified and supply will be restored. During the day time, the disruptions are due to maintenance being carried out in many areas. Old equipment is being replaced with new ones in several areas,” said CGM Metro Zone, Satish Kumar.
