CPM against toll plaza near Manali

As part of the EMRIP works, NHAI improved about 30 km road network to ease flow of truck traffic
Chennai: CPI (M) on Friday urged the state government and Chennai corporation to prevent National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) from setting up a new toll plaza in Chinna Mathur near Manali on Inner Ring Road as part of the Ennore Manali Road Improvement Project.As part of the EMRIP works, NHAI improved about 30 km road network in North Chennai to ease flow of truck traffic from Chennai and Ennore ports and improve road connectivity between ports to national highway network.
“To collect tolls from vehicles using the four upgraded highways, NHAI is setting up a toll gate and Tamil Nadu government also given its approval,” said CPI (M) north Chennai district secretary L. Soundararajan. As per the rules of NHAI, there should be a gap of 80 km between two toll plazas. “Already, NHAI has been collecting toll from plazas at Padinallur on Kolkata highway and at Kallikuppam on Chennai Bypass.
Violating the rules a new toll plaza being set up near Manali on a state highway,” he said in a statement. Besides, the site of the toll plaza falls within the Chennai corporation limits. “There are over 30 villages and residential areas located around the toll plaza. People will be forced to pay toll for each and every time they cross the plaza for their daily routine,” he added.
