Janata Parivar set to unite today

SP gets a good deal with Mulayam Singh likely to head the party

New Delhi: The decks have been cleared for the unveiling of a merged Janata Parivar on Wednesday. Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has convened a meeting of leaders of all the six political outfits merging into one party.

While Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is arriving in Delhi on Wednesday morning, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav reached New Delhi on Tuesday evening. JD(U) leader and Rajya Sabha MP K.C. Tyagi on Tuesday maintained that a formal announcement would be made about the new political outfit after the meeting at the residence of the SP chief on Wednesday.

The meeting is likely to be attended by leaders of the SP, JD(U), RJD, INLD, JD(S) and Samajwadi Janata Party.

The new political outfit is likely to be called Samajwadi Janata Party, with bicycle as the election symbol.

The development comes at a time when Bihar is headed for state Assembly elections later this year. The proponents of the unity believe that a united Janata Parivar outfit could effectively stop the march of the BJP to power in the state.

The SP has apparently got its pound of flesh in the process of unification, with Mr Yadav likely being the president of the party along with its election symbol and trademark red colour staying with the united outfit.

JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav, along with the RJD supremo, are likely to get key positions in the party, while Mr Kumar would spearhead the campaign in Bihar.
