Connect with grassroots, PM Narendra Modi to ministers

The government is under attack from the Opposition on the land acquisition Bill

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday interacted with ministers of state with independent charge, and asked about their experience in the government and the feedback of people over government policies.

At this meeting, where BJP president Amit Shah was also present and that lasted over an hour, Mr Modi, it is learnt, asked the ministers if they had faced any difficulties in the discharge of their duties. The PM, sources said, told them that maintaining a connect with grassroots workers was a must to dispel any ambiguity about government policies.

Mr Modi also sought suggestions from them for the coming BJP national executive meeting in Bengaluru, which could be included in the resolutions.

Some key ministries like coal, petroleum, environment and commerce and industry are headed by ministers of state with independent charge instead of full-fledged Cabinet ministers.

This meeting comes at a time when the government is under attack from the Opposition on the land acquisition Bill and the government and the BJP want to allay fears on land acquisition among farmers. The RSS had also warned the government and the BJP of a “disconnect” with the people.

The government wants to send out a message that the NDA is not against farmers and that their interests will not be compromised. Prior to the Budget Session, the PM called the entire council of ministers for “out-of-the-box” ideas.
