Go green: Maneka Gandhi bats for 'Gaunyle' to cleanse offices

Minister says surface cleaner made from cow urine is environment-friendly

New Delhi: Union minister Maneka Gandhi has urged her colleagues in the council of ministers to use surface cleaner made from extracts of cow urine in government offices instead of “chemically bad” phenyl.

In a letter to other ministers, Ms Gandhi has requested them to switch over to “Gaunyle” — cleaning liquid made from cow urine extracts, citing that it is “environment-friendly”.

“I would request you to replace phenyl, which is currently being used in your ministry and is chemically bad for environment, with Gaunyle,” she said in the letter sent earlier this month.

Adding further, the women and child development minister said that the Kendriya Bhandar is now stocking “Gaunyle” as well.

Phenyl is a cheap cleaning (chemical-based) liquid, which is widely used in government offices to clean floor and toilets.

Gaunyle is being marketed by an NGO, Holy Cow Foundation. It is environment-friendly without any synthetic base, but is not as strong as phenyl.
