'I would have cheered for India had Pakistan defeated Australia'

Mumbai: Iqbal Sandhu, the taxi driver in Sydney came home early to watch Australia's World Cup quarterfinal match against Pakistan played at the Adelaide Ovalon Friday.

The father of India-origin Australian player Gurinder Sandhu, will now cheer for Australian team on March 26 when Team India is scheduled to play the second semifinal on his home-ground.

"I am not sure whether me and my wife would get tickets as most of the semifnial tickets have been sold out, I am told. I shall enquire with my son's friends to get the tickets. If we get it, is good or else will watch match on TV at home," he said.

"It is a different situation here in Australia. The player gets complimentary tickets for his family only if he is in the team and not otherwise," he added.

"I would have cheered for my birth country India had Pakistan defeated Australia on Friday," he said.

The father of 21-year-old Gurinder loves his profession.

"I drive only during day time and I enjoy it. Before taking up the taxi job, I was serving in an automobile company."

"I have been driving taxi for the last four years. It is always good to be your own boss because you can work any number of hours you want. Taxi business is very flexible and it has been a great help for me to ferry my boys to cricket training and also to the games," he said.

"I am planning to come to India with all family members when Gurinder is to play the IPL this season," he signed off.
