Land Bill aimed at welfare of farmers, says PM Narendra Modi in 'Mann Ki Baat'

This was the sixth edition of the radio programme in which Modi shared his thoughts

New Delhi:Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the states could continue with the old law if they have an objection to amendments in the Land Acquisition Bill.

"We felt that there was a need to bring some amendments in the law, we only wish for welfare of farmers and villages. If states have objection to amendments in Land Acquisition Bill, they can continue with the old law," Prime Minister Modi said while addressing the farmers in his ' Mann ki baat' programme.

"I assure all my farmer brothers that I will alert all state governments as well as all departments in the Central Government over the issues that you have raised. Land acquisition law was brought 120 years ago. Political leaders who are today posing as your well wishers, protesting against this bill, have also governed under this law," he added.

Prime Minister Modi requested the farmers to keep away from statements made to earn political benefits.

"Sometimes, people who make laws sitting in air conditioned rooms do not know the ground reality in villages. I appeal to all my farmers ' brothers and sisters to keep away from statements made to earn political benefits," said Prime Minister Modi.

"We only have a right to govern if we pay attention on small issues as well. Farmers have mentioned in their letters issues related to farming, but many other issues like lack of clean drinking water. I'm standing with you at this sad hour; I assure you that the government will provide assistance with complete sensitivity at this hour of the need," he said.

"I have said in Parliament, that if someone still feels some changes are required, we are willing to take up suggestions. We are emphasizing on health of mother land as well, which is why we've started soil health card scheme. I assure you that I will not break your trust," he added.

This is the sixth edition of the radio programme in which the Prime Minister shares his thoughts with the citizens.

The Prime Minister has dwelt upon several issues close to the hearts of the people such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, promotion of khadi, skill development, scholarship for disabled children, infrastructure for educational institutions, and menace of drugs in his earlier 'Mann Ki Baat' programmes.

In the last edition broadcast on February 22, he urged the students to shed their examination stress and develop a positive attitude.

The 'Mann Ki Baat' programme has generated an encouraging response from citizens across the country. It is simultaneously broadcast live on All India Radio and Doordarshan channels. The address can also be heard on Vividh Bharti, FM Gold, and FM Rainbow radio.
