Hyderabad Municipal Corporation ignores High Court; cuts electricity connections

Municipal body is collecting property tax by disconnecting civic connections

Hyderabad: Despite the High Court questioning the method of collecting property tax by disconnecting power connections, the GHMC officials of the Alwal Circle cut off the wires in the defaulters’ properties. The connections to some houses in the Telecom Colony, Alwal, were disconnected.

Rama Chandraiah, a retired IPS officer and a resident of Telecom Colony, said, “The street-lights in my colony have been dysfunctional for over a week. When I called the Circle officer to lodge a complaint, the concerned officer said that no department employee was available to attend to the issues as all the officials were assigned to tax collection duties.”

The deputy commissioner has passed oral orders to disconnect the civic connections to defaulters' properties.

Meanwhile, citizens affected by the variation in tax assessment will hold a rally on Monday and meet the concerned GHMC officials during the Praja Vani Programme at the circle level.
