It's challenging to break the clutter without compromising on your ideas: Sneha Khanwalkar

She is now gearing up to churn out chart-topping numbers for ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’

Sneha Khanwalkar is one brilliant artist known to create a different setting with her mash ups. Be it Karnatic music or Rajasthani folk, she has enthralled us with all. Ahead of the new season of Coke studio @ MTV, we caught up with her for a quick chat.

With this new season of Coke studio, what should we expect from you?

I don’t know yet. I am assuming the melodies and composition will decide that. The topic is happiness and I have never experimented with this emotion. I do a lot of dark and intense kind of numbers, so let’s see how this works out.

Have you been following the previous seasons? Which composition did you enjoy the most?

I have been following it a bit. I won’t be able to drop names but there are huge challenges out there. These guys have already got millions of hits and fans. Eventually, Coke Studio is about bringing diverse kind of concepts to the entire country and I am glad to be a part of it.

There has been a lot of focus on folk and sufi music. What are you bringing in this season?

I need to figure out on how to not make it region centric. Even if I do make it region centric, I will find a way to make it sound new and fresh.

How do you cope up with directors’ expectation keeping in mind the audience’s demand?

In films, you have directors sitting on your head…which is great. So far I have been lucky with the directors I have worked with, because they are open to experimenting with stuff. In fact, I don’t know what I’ll do if I am all by myself.

What are the challenges you face as a music director?

For me, challenging would be to weave your thoughts into a piece of art. I need to present something which you have never seen on YouTube. It is difficult to break the clutter, without compromising on your ideas, to match it to the film.

At the end of the day, one shouldn’t take themselves too seriously as it’s like any other job. People like us, we get drifted from time to time. So the challenge is to not forget that you are an artist.

Sneha Khanwalkar had wowed her listeners with her new-age sound in Gangs Of Wasseypur and now she is gearing up for the fast-pacedByomkesh Bakshi’.
