Visakhapatnam beach turns into a dumpyard, authorities fail to take action

Four specified dumpyards by the GVMC in the city are wasted

Visakhapatnam: The construction debris that is being dumped on the sea-side on the beach road has still not stopped. Authorities concerned have not taken any steps to remove the existing debris from the site.

After DC highlighted the major violation, the GVMC officials on February 5 said that immediate action would be taken. However, after 11 days the heaps of debris have only increased. On the 10-km stretch from Jodugullapalem to Gitam University, the beach is filled with piles of construction waste and debris.

The debris is not only polluting the sea water, but it is also spoiling the beach and its beauty to a great extent. According to GVMC commissioner Pravin Kumar, the land where the debris is being dumped is not public land, and in some cases, the land owners are themselves dumping the debris from their other construction sites. He however, admitted that the debris should not be dumped on the sea side.

“We will take swift action and clean the area,” he said.

Besides, the GVMC authorities alleged that lack of patrolling on the beach road by the beach patrol parties has also led to degradation of the beach.
