Seven injured in a firecracker unit blast in Srikakulam

Similar blasts have occurred thrice in the same village earlier

Srikakulam: Seven persons belonging to the same family were severely injured after a blast in an illegal firecracker unit at Kothamaruvada area under Vangari mandal in Srikakulam district on Sunday. Five of them are severely injured.

Those injured have been identified as G Bhaskara Rao, (40), G Ganapathi (38), G Srinu (28), G Poleesu (40) years and three-year-old G Aparna, besides two others, who belong to the same family.

The injured were rushed to a government hospital at Rajam, where condition of five persons is said to be critical. According to hospital officials, they received almost 80 per cent burns.

Collector P Laxminarasimham, on reaching the spot, moved the injured to King George Hospital (KGH) at Visakhapatnam.

Police and Revenue officials rushed the spot while Minister KA Naidu directed the officials to provide better treatment to all the injured.

The injured family members were engaged in manufacturing fire crackers for festivals and marriages, sources said.

Similar blasts had occurred about three times in the same village.

About three months ago, a similar incident took place in Ponduru village in which two people had died.
