YouTube videos: A new medium of earning for the young generation

Independent content creators adoption has gained momentum in the last two years

Independent content creators or Video bloggers is a new league of young generation entrepreneurs who are making quick bucks by making small videos on a variety of topics for YouTube. With the channel too giving them edge on search engines for original content, young folks, mostly home makers, are making use of the partner programme to net a tidy sum every month.

“While music, Bollywood and entertainment are big categories on YouTube in India, in the last few years, we have seen emergence of Independent content creators — who make videos only for the web, also called as video bloggers,” said Gautam Anand, director content partnerships and operations, APAC of YouTube India. Independent content creators adoption has gained momentum in the last two years. Content creators like Nisha Madhulika in cooking, Geeky Ranjit in tech blogging and many others have become very successful on YouTube.

Take for example, 16-year-old Yaman from Hyderabad. Following his passion in cooking that he developed about three years ago, the young man launched his own YouTube channel, Cooking Shooking, in April 2012. It has over 65,485 subscribers and 9.4 million views as on date. “I got my inspiration from Sanjeev Kapoor and Sanjay Thumma of Vahchef fame motivated me to enter the world of cooking,” said the teenager.

Proliferation of smart phones, used to make high quality videos, freedom to showcase original content with over 60 million unique Indian users at one go and easy money through partnership programmes seems to driving this trend. YouTube Partner Program helps creators to earn money by offering to run advertisements on their videos. “This has been an extremely successful program as thousands of creators now do this as a full time profession and make over six figure sum every month,” said Mr Anand. “In some markets, we have introduced pay per subscription and pay per stream,” he added.

Nisha Madulika is another popular chef on YouTube who conducts video tutorials. “Though, I have none in particular as inspiration, I follow a number of cooking professionals for tips and ideas,” said the 54-year-old housewife from Delhi, who has a professional kitchen set up for shooting videos.
