Burdwan blast: NIA arrests five more accused

Police in December had arrested a key suspect in the blast

Kolkata: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sent five more accused to police custody till February 3, in connection with 2014 Burdwan blast.

Two members of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh were killed in an explosion while building homemade bombs in Burdwan in West Bengal in October last year.

Police in December 2014 had arrested a key suspect in the blast who they believed was linked to a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of neighbouring Bangladesh and stage a coup there.

Meanwhile, five people arrested in connection with the blast were sent to police custody. A lawyer of National Investigation Agency ( NIA), Shyamal Ghosh, said that they needed more time to unearth details of their involvement.

"Today, one accused produced from the police custody and we have prayed for further police custody and that accused has been recommended for further police custody up to 3rd February. Other four accused arrested yesterday and were attached to various madrassa (Islamic institution)," said Ghosh.

He further said that the accused used to recruit young boys and give them training.
