Home sees red over flag's improper display

MHA said that any kind of disrespect towards the flag can attract up to three years jail term

New Delhi: The nationalistic Narendra Modi government has asked Central ministries as well as state governments to ensure due respect is shown to the tricolour being displayed on social media platforms as they are fast becoming the global interface of the Modi government.

Further, taking note of repeated concerns over plastic flags strewn over or lying disfigured after Republic Day celebrations, which becomes a common sight every year, the Union home ministry has warned that such offences can attract jail term of up to three years.

The Union home ministry has seen red over the “improper display” of the national flag on “official websites” manned by the Central ministries as well as the state governments, saying it has received a number of complaints. The MHA has asked Central ministries and states to strictly adhere to the provisions laid under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act of 1971 while displaying the national flag.

The MHA also said “Offences such as ‘disfiguring, burning, destroying, defiling, trampling, or bringing into contempt the national flag can invite up to three years jail term.”
