The ABCD of Akshara Haasan

Akshara Haasan the upcoming actress is here to carve her own path

She had stars in her eyes when she spoke of SRK, but was pragmatic when predicting her future in the industry. Akshara Haasan, the new star kid on the B’town horizon, comes across as grounded. She wants to make a name for herself through her hard work and talent, not through her starry lineage.

Excerpts from an interview:

Q. Shamitabh, a great launch pad
I’m very excited and lucky to be working on my first film with Balki sir, Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush. Actually, the very first day, as soon as Balki sir finished reading the script, he looked at me and asked me how I thought it was. I was bowled over by the narration, and said ‘yes’ to working in the film. However, he gave me two days to think it over. I discussed the script with my mom (Sarika) who gave her opinion, but also told me to take my own decision and that she would be happy with whatever I chose. For me it was a big “Yes”!

Q. Where do you see yourself after this film?
I honestly do not know. I want to reach a respectable ‘place’ in the industry with this film. Whether or not that will happen will be known only after the film’s release. I have noticed, that not all actors’ kids become good actors. I feel good about my work, I had the freedom for self-discovery. However, I have worked a lot to learn about the creative aspects of film making. And now, I want to have a strong foothold in acting.

Q. What qualities have you inherited from your parents?
My mom has a lot of patience and maturity and has such a pretty face. My parents are deep thinkers and like them, I sometimes surprise myself with deep thoughts! And I do speak a little like my dad, and am very observant.

Q. Does dad Kamal Hassan advise you?
Yes! I do speak to him and get tips on whatever I am doing. We mostly talk over the phone. I live with my mom. I am the family pet and also the recipient of advice from everyone!

Q. Why did you reject Mani Ratnam’s offer?
At that time I wanted to explore, needed more exposure and was still learning. I worked as assistant director in a feature film. I also worked in commercials as an AD to learn about every sphere of filmmaking. And at that point I was learning dance. I was not mentally and emotionally prepared for acting, so would not have been able to give 100 percent to the role.

Q. Her love for Shah Rukh Khan
I would love to work with all the Khans. Par jab mein Shah Rukh Khan ka naam bolti hoon toh mera dil baag baag ho jata hai. I remember I was the AD for commercials in which SRK was playing the lead. The director told me to go and give him the look point and I was so nervous. I told myself, ‘Akshara behave yourself, you need to prove your worth through your working capabilities and not just by telling people that you are the daughter of Kamal and Sarika.’ However, the director told SRK about it and he said, “Arre tum kitni beautiful ho, bilkul Sarika ki tareh”, and he praised me a lot. I still cherish those memories.
