Mobile toilets soon to keep Belagavi clean

At least 100 similar toilets for the city are being sponsored by the Rotary and Lions Clubs

Belagavi: Many cities in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu already have them and now the city corporation plans to shortly install hundreds of mobile ready-to-use toilets across Belagavi, particularly in 51 of its slums, which are very poor in hygiene.

To begin with the corporation will install the toilets in slums, Dalit colonies and crowded areas of the city. One mobile toilet will be installed for every two or three houses in the slums.

The project was worked out considering how difficult the civic administration has been finding to build public toilets due to lack of space in the city, according to sources in the city corporation.

Not only do the mobile toilets not need much space, they are also economically viable and will keep the city clean, they say. The readymade toilets have a commode, water facility and a septic tank. Each of the toilets is movable and can be taken away for repair or replacement.

The mobile toilets that costs Rs 20,000 each, have been tested successfully by the corporation during the legislature sessions in Belgaum. At least 100 similar toilets for the city are being sponsored by the Rotary and Lions Clubs.
