Death in Nitya ashram: Police to exhume body

The Bidadi police have taken up an unnatural death case

BENGALURU: The Ramanagar police have intensified the probe into the mysterious death of Sangeeta, a devotee who died at Nityananda Ashram on December 28.

Following a complaint filed by Sangeeta’s mother Jansi Rani, who suspected foul play in her daughter’s death, the Bidadi police have taken up an unnatural death case.

On Tuesday, a police team, including the Bidadi police sub-inspector and five others, left for Tiruchi in Tamil Nadu, the native place of Sangeeta where her body was buried.

The police said that they would get necessary permission from the authorities there and exhume the body. “As part of the investigation, we have decided to conduct the postmortem again to know the exact cause of her death.”

Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Ramanagar sub-division, Lakshmi Ganesh, said that the very next day of the death, the police had conducted a postmortem.

“We had conducted a postmortem at a hospital near Bidadi and we are waiting for its report.

As Sangeeta’s mother has expressed that she did not trust the hospital where the postmortem was conducted and has again filed a complaint seeking a re-post mortem at a government hospital, we have decided to exhume the body and conduct the autopsy.

A team has gone to Tiruchi and the postmortem will be conducted there on Wednesday,” he said.

Asked whether the police had questioned anyone in the ashram in connection with the incident, he said that the course of the investigation will be decided only after the doctors submit a report on the exact cause of death.

Sangeeta, who had joined the ashram about four year sago, was rechristened as Ma Nithya Turiyatitananda Swamini. She reportedly died of a cardiac arrest on December 28.

On Saturday, Sangeeta’s mother approached the Ramangar SP and filed a complaint that she suspected foul play behind her daughter’s death. Further, she held a press conference and charged that her daughter was assaulted and harassed by some devotees in the ashram.
