Federation wanted Central government to give up the methane gas extraction project

Mayiladuthurai: Members of the anti-methane project federation observed anti-methane project day across Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapatitnam districts of the Cauvery delta area on Sunday.According to the federation’s chief coordinator, Mr T. Jayaraman, the stir was to urge the Central government to give up the methane gas extraction project and also to urge the Tamil Nadu government not to renew the MoU with Eastern Energy Corporation (EEC), a private oil extraction company, to extract methane gas from the Cauvery delta region.

The MoU expires Sunday. He warned that if the Central and state governments allowed EEC to continue its extraction of methane gas in the region, the delta will become a desert and also affect the livelihood of farmers of the delta. He wanted the public and private sector oil companies to be sent out immediately from the delta region.

He said members of the federation, along with Left forces and like-minded organisations had held demonstrations at Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Sirkazhi, Tiruvarur, Mannargudi, Nagapattinam and other places across the delta region on Sunday.They had also observed the first death anniversary of natural agricultural scientist Nammalvar, he said.
