Bomb hoax near US consulate

Caller identified himself as intelligence officer and issued bomb threat to police control room

Chennai: Police are on the lookout for a caller who identified himself as an intelligence officer and issued a bomb threat to the police control room on Saturday night. A male voice called the south control and asked for traffic to be cleared along the Cathedral Road-Eldams Road stretch as there was an intelligence alert about a bomb being planted along the road.

Police said the caller mentioned Ellaiyamman temple in Teynampet and disconnected. Since the US consulate is also situated on Cathedral Road, police teams made a thorough search.
A senior officer told Deccan Chronicle that there was no particular threat to the consulate and no embassy officials and employees would have been present in the campus after evening hours.

“We have Armed Reserve constables and city police personnel on security duty round the clock apart from the riot control vehicle Vajra on standby always. So, there is no possibility of any intruder roaming the area,” the officer said. Meanwhile, the number was traced as a local one and was found switched off throughout Saturday. A senior police officer said that the caller is suspected to be an elderly person. Further investigations are on.
