US envoy in India, eye on stronger relations

Richard Verma is a former assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs

New Delhi: Just about three weeks ahead of the visit of US President Barack Obama to India, the new US ambassador to India, Richard Verma arrived in New Delhi on Friday.

Mr Verma, a person of Indian origin, is a former assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs.

From 2009-2011, he served as a principal advisor to the then secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

Earlier in his career, Mr Verma served in the Senate as the senior national security advisor to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

“I look forward to meeting the Indian people and working together with the Indian government on our shared goals of security, development, and prosperity,” Mr Verma said.
