Waves sweep across road in Kakinada

The sea water also gushed onto the Kakinada Beach Road, inundating it

KAKINADA: The depression in the Bay of Bengal has caused extensive damage to the Beach Road at Uppada, disrupting road traffic from Kakinada to Uppada.

Four-metre high waves on Thursday morning scattered boulders and stones along a 300-metre stretch of the road. A four-kilometre stretch of the road was rendered unusable. The sea water also gushed onto the Kakinada Beach Road, inundating it.

Experts from IIT-Madras had studied sea erosion and geo-tube wall had also been constructed experimentally along a two-kilometre stretch at the cost of Rs 14 crore. But it was damaged by Cyclone Hudhud in 2014.

The Pune-based Central Water Power Research Station is likely survey the area and find a permanent solution to the problem of sea erosion.
