Bengaluru: Sunday’s low intensity blast on Church Street, which claimed the life of a 38-year-old journalist Bhavani from Tamil Nadu and injured a young man Karthik, is the fourth ‘terror’ attack in the City since July 25, 2008, in which the perpetrators have triggered a low intensity blast, reportedly using ammonium nitrate as the main explosive.
Though it is too early to assess what kind of explosives were used in the improvised explosive device (IED), Bhavani died due to fatal head injury after shrapnels from the blast pierced her scalp from behind. The IED may reportedly be a mix of ammonium nitrate, shrapnels and gelatin sticks. What detonated the IED is yet to be known, said an officer.
In July 2008 the City was rocked by low intensity serial blasts, which claimed the life of a woman and injured several others, were triggered by timer devices and executed by the Kerala module.
In 2010 twin low intensity blasts were executed by the Indian Mujahideen outside a packed Chinnaswamy stadium during the Indian Premier League matches, which injured more than 15 people. Later, the police had detonated five low intensity crude bombs that were found outside the Stadium.
On May 1 a low intensity blast from an IED reportedly executed by Faisal’s gang the five absconding SIMI terrorists - in Bengaluru-Guwahati Express had fatally injured City-based techie P. Swathi.
Women frequent victims
Women have been victims of the terror strikes in Bengaluru since July 2008. Barring the December 2005 Indian Institute of Science terror attack in which Prof Munish Chandra Puri of IIT Delhi was fatally injured, the serial bomb blasts in July 2008 claimed the life of a woman at Madiwala.
In April 2013 the bomb blast in Malleswaram by the Tamil Nadu module seriously injured two girls, On May 1 this year, P Swathi from the City lost her life in a low intensity blast in Bengaluru-Guwahati train at Chennai Central Station. The IED was reportedly planted in Bengaluru.
On Sunday, 38-year-old Bhavani lost her life in a low intensity explosion on Church Street.
