'Exodus: Gods and Kings' banned in Egypt due to 'historical inaccuracies'

London: 'Exodus: Gods and Kings,' based on the Biblical book of Exodus, has been banned by Egyptian authorities due to "historical inaccuracies". According to the censorship board, the film, which stars Christian Bale as Moses, depicts that Jews built the Pyramids, and that an earthquake, not a miracle by Moses, caused the Red Sea to part, which was not right, the BBC reported.

Reports say that the film was also banned in Morocco the day before its premiere, even though the state-run Moroccan Cinema Centre (CCM) had given the film the green light.

The book of Exodus says that the Jewish slaves were led to freedom by Moses after God inflicted a series of plagues on Egypt, and the Pyramids are believed to have been built about 1,000 years before the story of the Exodus. The biblical epic, which reportedly cost 140 million dollars to make, took 24.5 million dollars on its debut weekend but has received mixed reviews.

The film has been described as "cinematically uninspired retelling of the Moses story" by Time, while Vulture said it was "as uneven as Ridley Scott's career", and the New York Times said it as "both woefully insufficient and much too much".
