Girl crushed under MTC bus

Bus tried to overtake the two wheeler and in process knocked it down

Chennai: A class 10 girl, riding pillion on her brother’s two-wheeler, died after she was fatally knocked down by a speeding MTC in Mandaiveli on Friday morning. Ganga Devi, 15, a student of Lady Sivaswamy Iyer Girls Higher Secondary School, Mylapore, was travelling with her brother Vigneswaran to school to attend a special class when she was crushed under the rear wheels of an MTC bus (route No. H51).

The police, quoting eye-witnesses, said the bus, plying from Chromepet to Parry’s Corner, overtook the two-wheeler on Devanathan street in Mandaveli and in the process, knocked it down. The girl was thrown off the bike and came under the rear wheels of the bus. Though she was taken to a hospital immediately, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Reacting to the incident, Devi, known to the family of Ganga, said the girl was a very good student in school.

After her father had died due to blood cancer, her mother Vijaya was struggling to make sure that her children were given proper education, by working as a domestic help. The girl was a regular winner in competitions in the school and even in some talent shows on private TV channels. MTC bus driver B. Ilayarajah, 38, who fled from the scene after causing the fatal accident, was arrested after two hours. He had managed to drive away with the bus after being intercepted by the public.
