Party-a-porter: Crack that dress code

Tips from designers on getting the look right for the New Year

With Christmas over, the countdown to New Year’s has begun. Here are a few tips that will ensure that you stand out at parties.

With the temperatures dipping, it’s all about embracing winter in style. Designer Varun Bahl believes that the way to look smart is to layer up. “Men can wear a shirt with a vest coat and add a jacket that is not too long.” says Varun, adding, “Men who are going to a club can go simple with rugged jeans and ankle length shoes.” Varun adds that one can never go wrong with the classics blacks and navy blues.

Designer Rocky S. believes in playing it safe, “Men can go in for a dressy shirt, you can wear a leather or sheep skin jacket, it’ll add to the look. For a more formal setting, a three piece suit with a smart neck tie or pocket square will do the trick. ”

When it comes to women, stylist Pernia Qureshi says, “Stack up your closet with overcoats, leggings, pea-coats, biker jackets, etc.. They are fashionable and also keep you warm. If you want to go in for something simple yet elegant, a black leather jacket paired with a white tee and denims is the way to go.”

Varun adds that should you decide to wear a dress, metallic colours with a dash of black is a great way to shine at parties. “For a party at night, metallic colours will stand out. But if you don’t want to look too glitzy, you can always opt for something in leather,” he adds.

While staying warm is the need of this season, designer Rocky says, “Women can always show a little skin. Pick an interesting neckline or try a one shoulder dress or even go backless.”

When it comes to the shoes, Pernia absolutely stands by boots. She says, “Boots are comfortable, chic and oh so stylish! Girly stiletto boots and knee-length boots are a must have this season. If you are feeling edgy, you can try quirky boots as well.”
