Work on metro station skywalk begins

Skywalk will help people exiting Udayam theater, and pedestrians to cross to the other side

Chennai: Work on making access paths to metro rail stations is picking up with the skywalk across the Ashok pillar junction and bridge near Vadapalani metro rail station having taken off. The work taken up by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is aimed at providing easy access to pedestrians to reach the Ashok Nagar metro rail station. Two pillars have been erected just outside the Udayam theater complex premises. The bridge which will start from this point will cross the road and connect to the metro rail station.

Besides helping commuters to reach the station, the elevated skywalk which will run for 100 meters across the road will also help people exiting the theater, and pedestrians to cross to the other side of the busy stretch.Traffic in the part of the road which extends from the Anna main road, was made one-way four years earlier. Though there are traffic signals to regulate vehicles, violations are common, making the junction dangerous.

"There are two traffic signals regulating traffic on either turn of the road. But people often violate the signal and cross directly to the other side," said a traffic police official.Similarly, the construction of a flyover has also begun at Vadapalani metro rail station. "The flyover will start from Vadapalani station, rise above the Vadapalani signal and get down immediately. This will help vehicles to skip the Vadapalani signal," said a CMRL official. This flyover will extend over a stretch of less than 1 kilometer. The projects will take about four months to be completed.
