Next target for Amit Shah: Delhi and Bihar Assembly polls

BJP will use PM Modi’s charisma to get the maximum seats in these two states

New Delhi: After its resounding victory in Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir, BJP president Amit Shah will now focus on next year’s Assembly polls in Delhi and Bihar.

The party will use Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s charisma to get the maximum seats in these two states. Sources said BJP president Amit Shah may take charge of party affairs in Delhi, that may go to the polls in mid-February. He may form a core team to focus on Bihar, where polls are expected by late next year.

Political observers feel that if the Congress, which was reduced to a handful of seats in the last Assembly elections in Delhi, was able to regain support among the Muslim and Dalits, the AAP would be weakened. As a result, the BJP could cross the magical figure of 35 seats to gain power in Delhi.

The saffron outfit and its allies had managed to get just 32 seats the last time. The BJP is expected to keep a close tab on the political developments in Bihar, where arch rivals JD(U)’s Nitish Kumar and RJD’s Lalu Prasad Yadav had joined hands after Mr Modi’s resounding victory in the Lok Sabha elections.

All through his three-decade long political career, Mr Nitish Kumar had been critising Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav for his jungle raj politics in the state.

Bihar may be tough nut for BJP

Though the two regional outfits have joined hands in Bihar, political observers feel that there are a lot of inherent contradictions in the vote share of the two parties at the grass root level. A local leader said that the polarisation of the votes may work to the advantage of the BJP. He said: “Both Dalits and Most Backward Caste communities are said to be supporters of Mr Nitish Kumar. And the RJD supremo is said to be having an upper hand among the Yadav’s in the state. Only saving grace of the two coming together is that this scenario could consolidate the Muslim vote share of the two outfits.”
