KOCHI: Filling of paddy fields is rampant in many areas in Maradu municipality, the favourite location of the realty business, clearly indicating that rules and regulations for the conservation of wetlands and paddy fields are only on paper. Vast tracts of paddy fields are being leveled for building construction near Kundannoor.
Local residents are up in arms against the lackadaisical attitude of the municipal authorities. "Big business groups have filled vast tracts of paddy fields and procured building permit with the connivance of authorities for constructing high-rise buildings in the area.
And the municipal authorities are in support of them," said Peter, a local resident who is in the forefront of the agitation.
Recently, filling of nearly two acres of paddy field in Vemblassery, had triggered a widespread public protest. Prof. C.M Joy, who visited the areas on Saturday, said that levelling of paddy fields was extensive and the repercussions of land filling would be seriously felt in the region.
However, municipal chairman T.K Devarajan told DC that the issue had already been taken up with the revenue authorities earlier.
Meanwhile, the long stretch of the Ayini Thodu, the main drainage canal of the area, has been encroached upon resulting in water logging in the area.
"Nearly 90 houses are affected by regular flooding due to the encroachment of the canal, which had a width of 13metres and was used for cargo movement in boats.
Following protests, the High Court ordered in 2005 for demolishing the encroached land along the side of the canal. But nothing has happened," said Peter.
