2 held for rape bid on Puducherry ashram woman

The accused sexually assaulted her when she was washed ashore after failed bid
Chennai: The Puducherry police on Sunday arrested two men for allegedly sexually assaulting one of the ‘ashram’ sisters who survived a suicide bid, in which her other 2 sisters and their mother died, earlier this week.
The arrested accused were identified as Raja, 35, and Vijay Kumar, 33 of Pillaichavadi, near Puducherry. According to the police, the two had sexually assaulted the woman who was washed ashore after she tried to commit suicide along with six of her family members when they were evicted from the ashram.
Two of her sisters and mother had died while two other sisters and their father survived. The suspects, who were engaged in catching crabs on the shore, noticed the woman and instead of rescuing her they allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The woman had reported this to the police the same day, saying the incident had taken place on the Kalapat shore. After the complaint the police started conducting enquiries, questioning people and browsing footage captured on CCTV cameras on the street and also in front of a few hotels.
After great efforts, the duo was nabbed. During interrogation, the two reportedly confessed to the crime.
