New Delhi: The external affairs ministry has taken disciplinary as well as administrative action against diplomat Devyani Khobragade for acquiring US passports for her children and giving an interview to a news channel without informing the ministry. Sources said that Ms Khobragade who was director-level officer in the development partnership division of the ministry has been sent on “compulsory wait” after a departmental inquiry.
Devyani Khobragade was embroiled in a long drawn controversy after being arrested in the US in a visa fraud case. However the the former deputy Consul General of India in New York stayed defiant saying that she didn’t violate any service rules be it taking dual passport for her children or talking to media.
Ms Khobragade said that her children who were given diplomatic passports at the time of her posting to the US, can have can have two passports according to service rules. She also justified talking to media saying it was under the ambit of service rules which provided allows her to express “personal views.”
