Couture for the classy home

Sisters and designers Gauri and Nainika have ventured beyond couture and designed a new home decor line

For more than a decade, designer sisters Gauri and Nainika ruled the fashion scene with their feminine silhouettes and classic designs that were donned by A-listers at various red carpet dos. After conquering the fashion world, the creative siblings decided to take a step forward and enter the next level of designing with their first interior brand Gauri and Nainika Home.

For the pretty duo, moving into furniture after exploring fashion was a natural progression in terms of interest as they grew up in a family that celebrated art in all forms. Be it interiors, fashion or fine arts, there was no dearth of inspiration in and around their home, says Nainika, who is married to entrepreneur Amit Vadehra. She says, “Both Gauri and I were always interested in interiors, and when I got married we decided to convert our interest into reality as my husband’s family has been manufacturing furniture and furnishings for the past 40 years. For our first line, we have collaborated with Tarun Vadehra for furniture pieces, Tasveer and Vadehra Art Gallery for art photographs, Klove for light designs to curate an assortment of home décor items.”

Speaking about the design sensibility of this label, Nainika mentions that everything that one will see under the roof of their three-storeyed showroom is aimed at creating a sense of luxury and class in a home. She says, “Our basic design philosophy is very European and we like to create things that are classy and have timeless appeal. So right from the Chesterfield sofa to the Porters chair and the Trestle table, we have reproduced classic designs in our way. We have tweaked these designs and added luxurious leather and velvets in elegant colours to create our interpretation of understated interior elegance.”

Even though the duo always dreamed of venturing into home décor, the final motivation came when they visited the décor fair two years ago. Gauri shares, “We went to the Maison and Objet furniture fair in Paris, and it was so inspiring that we decided to branch out into interior design. We travelled a lot to curate the perfect home that is all about luxury and reflects our taste. In terms of designs, we did reproductions of classic furniture pieces in lovely colours using contemporary upholstery. There are some beautiful pieces like wing chairs in red and blue fur, arty lights and accessories. We love stripes, so there is a range that is accentuated using bold black and white stripes in the furniture. You’ll also find interesting loveseats, a romantic white four-poster bed, oak dining chairs in a grain-sack jute, maritime pendant lights, tripods and other classics re-invented for modern homes.”
