Manikandan’s Kidney gives Bini new life

The successful transplant surgery means a lot to Bini who wants to educate her two son

Kochi: The prayers have finally been answered. Bini Babu (42), the only income earner of her four-member family who was struggling to make both ends meet, got a new lease of life thanks to Manikandan T P, an ex-Sailor and currently an employee of Kalady University, who donated one of his kidneys after coming to know of her plight.

“The kidney transplant surgery has gone well. Both the donor and the receiver are doing fine. The former has been shifted to a room while the latter is still in the Intensive care unit,” said Dr Babu Francis, Medical Superintendent and HOD, Neprology, Lisie Hospital.

The complicated surgery was assisted by a team comprising Dr Damodaran Nambiar, HOD (Urology) and Dr Viju George, Associate Consultant.

“The transplant surgery was originally scheduled for December 1 but had to be postponed on medical grounds. We were a bit concerned, but, finally all has worked out well. I am slowly recovering my health.

Doctors now say I can be discharged by Monday next. They also say the receiver too is recuperating but is still in the ICU,” said Manikandan.

Bini Babu, a native of Sreemoolanagaram on the outskirts of the district, has been suffering from the disease for the past five years and was undergoing dialysis since December last.

She was admitted to the Lisie Hospital early November. The successful transplant surgery means a lot to Bini who wants to educate her two sons. She had already suffered many tragedies in her life.
