Government may take ordinance route for Insurance Bill

Political circles are abuzz with the speculation.

New Delhi: Speculation is rife in political circles that the NDA government may bring an Ordinance to increase FDI limit in Insurance sector to 49 per cent if it is not able to pass the much awaited Insurance Amendment Bill during this Winter Session.

Though government sources were tight-lipped about the possibility of an Ordinance to increase the limit, political circles were abuzz with the speculation that if the Bill is not passed this Session, then Centre may explore other available options.

A senior minister told this newspaper that the Government was still hopeful of Opposition seeing reason and finally supporting the Insurance Bill in Rajya Sabha.

Sources in the government did not rule out the possibility of an Ordinance but they maintained nothing can be said when the Session is on.

“As long as the session is on, no one can think of an Ordinance. We will try to get the bill passed,” a source said.

The government’s action of not moving the Bill in Rajya Sabha for the past two days gave more fuel to the speculation.
