Rescue at Tank Bund

Majority of suicide attempts made by women: data

Hyderabad: The bund of Hussainsagar is the most favourite suicide site in the city. In 2014 alone 125 people attempted suicide (of which 42 died and 83 were saved) near the bund.

Women are more in number among the rescued (of the 83 saved 62 were women).

NTR Garden, Lumini Park and Necklace Road have become a hub for drug peddlers, eve teasers, sex workers and bike racers. 300 eve teasers were booked on Sunday alone.

72 vehicles were seized and six were produced before court. Many minors were among the arrested.

On Sunday night two officials of the lake police rescued K. Satish, 41, an electrician when he attempted suicide at the tank bund.

At around 12 midnight the two guards noticed the Nacharam resident jumping into Hussainsagar. However, they rescued him.

Central zone DCP V.P. Kamalasan Reddy stated, “In 2014, 83 persons were saved. However, 42 committed suicide at Hussainsagar in 2013.

75 people were saved. The bund is turning a suicide spot due to its depth. Last week a woman and her three children tried to jump into the lake. However, she was saved by the team.”

The Necklace Road is a hub for drug addicts and peddlers, sex workers and eve teasers. At the Lumbini Park rag pickers and vagabonds settle in during the late hours.

The lake police booked 300 eve teasers and 150 vagabonds on Necklace Road during the year. The rag pickers and vagabonds were bounded over for good behaviour and also counselled.

The police also has a database of the people booked along with their pictures and address details.

Fifteen new guards have been deployed along with the existing 22 lake police guards. On an average 25,000 visitors come to Hussainsagar during the weekends.

As part of safety measures at Hussainsagar the lake police team introduced a patrol boat (with two guards, a swimmer and operator), patrolling vehicle and five bicycles for effective patrolling around Necklace Road.
