Kanaka Durga laddu sheds weight

The 100 gm laddu will become 80 gm from December 18

VIJAYAWADA: The laddu prasadam of Kanaka Durga temple will weigh less in a few days.

The decision was taken by the state endowments department commissioner a few days back to ensure that the temple does not have to hike the price of the laddus.

The laddu of this temple currently weighs 100 gram and is being sold at Rs 10 each

The Durga temple sells, on an average, 45,000 to 50,000 laddus per day. The number reaches 60,000 to 75,000 on Fridays and Sundays.

More than one lakh laddus are sold per day on special occasions like Sarannavaratri utsavams and Bhavani deekshala viramana period.

Thus this temple is losing anywhere between Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.40 lakhs on week days.

This forced the temple authorities to request the endowments department to grant them the permission to reduce the weight of the laddu from the present 100 gram to 80 gram.

The officials felt that the devotees would prefer this over the proposal of hiking the price while keeping the weight intact.

The endowments commissioner, Ms Anuradha, recently approved this proposal.

Executive officer of the Kanaka Durga temple Ch. Narsinga Rao confirmed this. He disclosed that they will decrease the weight of the laddus from December 18.

He further said that many temples in the state like Simhachalam and others had already implemented this plan from March of this year.

The EO further clarified that there will be no change in the weight or price of other prasadam i.e. pulihora, which is very famous with the devotees.
