Aligarh: Former Uttar Pradesh and Railways captain Mohammad Shahid passed away after failing to recover from a prolonged heart illness, here on Saturday. The ex-UP batsman has undergone a bypass in 2013 and did not recover since. He was 66.
Born here on November 11, 1948, Shahid made his first-class debut for UP in the 1966-67 Ranji Trophy, but played just one match that season and shifted to Railways in 1968-69.
Shahid, who also bowled leg-spin, returned to his home state in 1973-74 after playing 21 matches for Railways.
He led the UP side that qualified for the Ranji Trophy final for the first time in 1977-78. The match is best remembered for Gundappa Viswanath's 247 and his 220-run stand with Brijesh Patel that set up Karnataka's victory by an innings and 193 runs.
Shahid also represented North Zone and Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy, and was a part of the Hanumant Singh-led Central team that played against the visiting West Indians in 1974-75.
Post retirement he became the cricket coach of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
