CBI works freely: M Venkaiah Naidu

Centre to rectify lapses in AP Reorganisation Act

Hyderabad: Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu felt West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was attacking the Centre on Saradha chit fund scam as she was losing ground in the state.

“Whoever is arrested in any case alleges harassment. Whoever is raided by the CBI claims it is political harassment. But, we don’t interfere in the functioning of CBI,” he added.

He said that the NDA government wants the CBI to function effectively and independently.

On the proposed amendment to the AP Reorganisation Act, Mr Venkaiah Naidu said the UPA government had passed the legislation in a haste, ignoring several shortcomings.

He said that the Act would not be altered completely, but the lapses would be rectified.

He said the Centre was consulting with the Congress and other parties and with MPs from both the states and legal experts were considering the amendment procedures.

On special status to AP, Mr Venkaiah Naidu said the National Development Council has to approve the measure.

It would require the support of many states, he said adding that the Centre is on the job, and would not want to make it a controversy.
