Ramesh vows to beef up security against maoists

Plans were afoot to streamline the joint action with the police force of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu

Wayanad: “The state government will strengthen the security in the Maoist-infested areas of the state,” said Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday.

He was addressing an all-party meeting organized at Kalpetta in the backdrop of the recent exchange of fire between Maoists and the police in the jungles of Periya Ghats near Mananthavadi.

Plans were afoot to streamline the joint action with the police force of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu soon, he said and added that he would visit the jungle regions of Vellamunda police station limits, where the reported Maoist attack had taken place.

Mr Chennithala told the meeting that all mainstream political parties should unite to check the attempts by Maoist elements to spread their roots in the district.

The district was not under Maoist threat, but such elements were working hard to get a foothold among the tribal population in the district, he pointed out.

Minister for Tribal Welfare P.K. Jayalakshmi, ADGP (North Zone) N. Shanker Reddy and ADGP (intelligence) A. Hemachandran among others were present.
