A win against Manchester United can be new start for Liverpool: Robbie Fowler
Mumbai: The presence of God is debatable. But for Liverpool fans, he existed. His name is Robbie Fowler – the man who scored 183 goals for the Reds and earned the nickname (God). Now, he doesn’t dribble or shoot but still, religiously prays for the success of the Anfield unit.
“I think there is still a lot to play for, if we get a result at Old Trafford (against Manchester United), it may lead to a new start,” he said, when asked about Liverpool’s lackluster show in the English Premier League this season.
Fowler, who holds the record of scoring the fastest ever hat-trick in the Premier league (four minutes, 33 seconds against Arsenal) added: “The league has been difficult this year. Apart from Chelsea, nobody really stood out.”
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers might be facing criticism from all quarters for the club not being able to repeat the good show of 2013 but Fowler rated him highly.
“I think he is a good manager and will gradually get the best out of the players. He might be in the pressure book right now but I feel the club should stick to him, his tactics are very good,” said the 39-year-old who was once penalised for celebrating a goal using the white line of the penalty area, he imitated sniffing cocaine.
Talking about the match against Basel, where Liverpool drew 1-1, he said: “I think they should have made some substitutions. People said I criticised Joe Allen but I never did. I thought he could be taken off in that game for the team’s benefit. I can never criticise Liverpool players. I want them to do well,” added Fowler, who thinks Cristiano Ronaldo is the best footballer in recent times.
The legend is also aware of Indian Super League, thanks to his old friend David James who is leading the Kerala Blasters FC.
“David rates the football here highly. I would love to come here too. Be it as a manager or player. Though I have not seen much of the tournament, but definitely heard a lot,” said Fowler, who wore the English cap 26 times, scoring seven goals.
On Friday here at the MMRDA grounds, he wore the goalkeeper’s gloves in the charity match against Bollywood filmstars, taking everyone by surprise.
