Green colonies wait for sops

The GHMC had promised to spend a fixed amount to develop a theme park per colony
Hyderabad: Colonies, which were awarded by the GHMC for their environmental efforts, are still waiting for the promised theme parks and children’s play areas.
During CoP-11, the GHMC had held competitions for colonies of all the five zones and winners were declared for each zone. For example Shanthinagar-Masab Tank was the winner for the Central Zone.
The GHMC had promised to spend a fixed amount per colony to develop a community park, a children’s play area and a small sitting area for senior citizens. The deal was that GHMC would put in 70 per cent of the funds while the residents would provide the remaining 30 per cent and also maintain the parks. However, even after several meetings, there are no signs of any work.
Ashwin Kumar, president of Shanthinagar Society-Masab Tank that won the Best Colony Award in Central Zone, said, “The GHMC commissioner had orally promised to allot Rs 10 lakh worth of civic works to us and had asked for suggestions. We had suggested renovating Park No. 1 and 3. The zonal officials also visited and inspected our colony. However, so far they have deprived us of our prize.”
Netaji Nagar, PVNR, stood second in the competition and was awarded Rs 5 lakh worth of works. “We submitted a detailed report on fencing the colony park; we asked the GHMC to at least maintain the exiting community park. Despite this, nothing is being done,” stated the members.
GHMC officials, meanwhile, said, “The files regarding colony development are pending with the health and sanitation department; we need to check whether the colonies’ suggestions meet our guidelines. Only then can we proceed with the community civic works.”
