Jayalalithaa I-T case adjourned to January 8

Jayalalithaa and Sasikala filed a petition seeking adjournment

Chennai: A city court on Thursday adjourned to January 8, 2015, further hearing of the income-tax cases against AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa and her close aide Sasikala. When the cases came up for hearing, counsel for Jayalalithaa and Sasikala filed a petition seeking adjournment as the department has not passed the final order on the compounding applications.

Following this, additional chief metropolitan magistrate, EOW-II, Egmore, Dakshinamoorthy, posted the matter to January 8. The income-tax department had filed criminal cases against erstwhile Sasi Enterprises and its partner - Jayalalithaa and Sasikala - for their failure to file returns for the assessment years 1991-92 and 1992-93.

On July 30, Jayalalithaa and Sasikala filed compounding petitions before the I-T department to end the litigation out of court. The regional compounding committee, at a meeting on November 26, decided to accept their request for compounding the offence. Following this, Rs1.99 crore was remitted to the department on November 27.
